Projects
In 2015 WEVS began its Project of the Year initiative. The aim was to accomplish significant objectives beyond the normal range of WEVS’ activities, for the benefit of the village. Some would require a timespan of more than one year. The projects are listed below. There was a hiatus during the COVID pandemic, causing one project – commissioning and installing a stag sculpture on the Fellow Green roundabout – to be paused until after the pandemic, but it now stands proudly in place.
2025: History Project
The new West End History Project will create a digital publicly accessible archive of historic photographs and other material, as a special section on this website. This archive will complement local historian John Smith’s extensive collection of printed photographs and documents.

2019-2024: Stag sculpture
WEVS commissioned a sculpture to act as an iconic marker of West End.
A stag was chosen on account of the large herd of red deer on the Army land on West End Common. The name of the stag is ‘Lucas’, since the red deer are at the far end of Lucas Green Road.
The sculpture was funded by public donation. The sculptor was George Hider.
The considerable time required for design, commissioning and creating the stag, and obtaining planning permission was extended by the Covid pandemic.
The photographs show (top) the stag installed in 2024, and a WEVS working party planting flowers in the rockery plinth; and (second) our Surrey County Councillor Rebecca Jennings-Evans (second left) unveiling the nearby plaque, accompanied by WEVS members.
2022: Orchard – Windlemere SANGS
Crabapples in autumn
The WEVS project for 2022 was to plant a community orchard.
Space at the Windlemere SANG (Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace) in Blackstroud Lane was negotiated with Surrey Heath Borough Council and their Greenspace Team. Funds were raised from grant applications to the National Garden Scheme and the Your Councillor Community Fund. A donation was also given by the West End Garden Club.
A total of 57 fruit trees, mostly half standard size, were planted by residents assisted by Surrey Heath Tree Wardens and the Greenspace Team. Local businessman, Jason King kindly dug all the holes with his mini digger to save sore backs!
From summer 2025 fruit should be available for picking.
2016-2018: Planted 130,000 bulbs
Over the course of three years, WEVS working parties planted 130,000 bulbs around the village, making dramatic, colourful and cheerful displays of flowers every Spring, with an emphasis on daffodils.
2015: Bench on New England Hill
WEVS installed the only bench on Brentmoor Heath.
2015: Footpath (Hookstone – Gordons)
WEVS restored a lost public footpath, linking Hookstone Lane to the A322 at Gordon’s roundabout, via Windlesham Road and the Gordon’s School playing fields.
