WEVS Project of the Year

The Village Society chooses a project each year to help fund and organise. We do this in conjunction with other groups such as the Parish Council, Surrey Wildlife and local organisations.

2017 Project of the Year

In 2016 when WEVS came up with the idea of planting spring bulbs, our vision was that it would take three years to achieve the full coverage.

2017 takes us into the second phase of the project. With our experience from last year we know that we have the ability to raise big sums of monies and also we can mobilise the local residents to plant the bulbs.

We set an ambitious target of buying approximately 80,000 bulbs, juxtapose this to 17,000 that we purchased and planted in 2016. To our advantage we had £1,600 leftover funds from last year which meant that we needed to raise approximately £2,700 more to be able to purchase 80,000.

We market tested the price variance and chose the same supplier as our preferred one - Boston Seeds.

The fund raising work is underway since the summer of 2017. As before we are reaching out to the local councils, businesses, organisations, clubs and local residents. If we are successful the councilís grant scheme will make the lion share of the funds.

The drawing here shows the zones that were planted in 2016 and the ones identified for planting in 2017. As you can see that this year we intend to focus on the side roads.

In order to tackle the anticipated volume of the bulbs WEVS has set aside six consecutive weekends to carry out the panting. They are:

30 Sep & 1 Oct

7 & 8 Oct

14 & 15 Oct

21 & 23 Oct

28 & 29 Oct

4 & 5 Nov

As with last year, we will meet at Rosewood Way car park at 10am. Weather permitting, we will work for three hours. Due safety reasons, we cannot allow children under 16 or pets to come to the planting events.

Each planting day will start with a safety briefing followed by work details. The volunteers will be split up into small groups. Should you have any queries, contact us at comms@wevs.org.uk

If you would like to contribute to the fund raising campaign, you can write a cheque to West End Village Society or pay cash and hand into Shivs Store. For bank transfers, please email us as above.

What started as a project to plant 9,000 bulbs ended up being 17,000 bulbs thanks to the generosity of our residents, organisations, councils, clubs and businesses. We raised £2,800 and spent £1,200 on bulbs and other incidentals, We carried over £1,600 for the next phase.

The planting work was concentrated on Guildford Road and around the perimeter of the recreation ground which is owned by the Parish council.

We planted 17,000 bulbs utilising 185 man hours.
